.308 Winchester Twist Rate
Recommended twist, the factory rates you will find, and a calculated stability chart for the bullets .308 Winchester actually shoots.
Almost every .308 Winchester barrel leaves the factory at 1:10", and that is not a compromise — it stabilizes everything from 150 grain hunting bullets to the 175 grain match bullets the cartridge is known for, with margin to spare.
Stay with 1:10" unless you intend to shoot the very long 200 to 220 grain bullets, where 1:9" or 1:8" buys you real margin. The older 1:12" barrels are fine for 150s and 168s but get thin above that.
For reference, a 175 grain bullet at 2650 fps in a 1:10" barrel comes out at a stability factor of 2.46.
.308 Winchester twist rate chart
Required twist is the rate that puts each bullet at a stability factor of 1.5. The remaining columns show the stability factor you actually get in each barrel.
| Bullet | Length | Velocity | Twist needed | Sg at 1:10" | Sg at 1:11" | Sg at 1:12" |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 gr hunting | 1.100" | 2820 fps | 1:14.1" | 2.97 | 2.46 | 2.07 |
| 168 gr match | 1.211" | 2700 fps | 1:13.0" | 2.53 | 2.09 | 1.76 |
| 175 gr match | 1.240" | 2650 fps | 1:12.8" | 2.46 | 2.03 | 1.71 |
| 185 gr Juggernaut | 1.320" | 2600 fps | 1:12.0" | 2.17 | 1.79 | 1.51 |
| 220 gr subsonic | 1.350" | 1050 fps | 1:12.7" | 2.42 | 2.00 | 1.68 |
Green is properly stable (1.5 and above), amber is marginal, red will not stabilize. Figures are calculated with the Miller twist rule at standard sea-level conditions, the same way the mobile app does it. Velocity is listed for reference and is not part of the calculation.

How twist rate works in .308 Winchester
A bullet in flight is trying to tumble. Air pressure on the nose creates a force that wants to flip it end over end, and the only thing preventing that is the spin the rifling gave it. Twist rate sets how much spin the bullet leaves with, so it sets which bullets your barrel can actually stabilize.
Length is the driver, not weight. Long, sleek, high-BC bullets are harder to stabilize than short stubby ones of the same mass, which is why two bullets of identical weight can have very different twist requirements. The Miller rule used here accounts for that directly, which is why every figure on this page is calculated from bullet length rather than looked up from weight alone.
Aim for a stability factor of 1.5 or better rather than merely clearing 1.0. The figures here use the mobile engine’s standard-atmosphere Sg formula. In the app, actual stability is corrected for temperature and station pressure: colder, denser air reduces stability.
